The 33rd Stars of the future U/12 & U/13 events took place at the Ivy Rooms, Carlow on Saturday 25th January and the standard among these young players was great. The number of players playing was small but the competition was fierce and a great days snooker was had by all the players. Joe La Cumbre from Portarlington Snooker Club was in fine form throughout both his group matches winning all matches without dropping a frame and went on to take both titles, a great achievement for this young prospect for the future and it also shows that Laois has Snooker talent and this we hope will encourage more young players coming through from this County in the years ahead. Sean O’Connor from Kilkenny was runner up in the U/12 beating Seamus McCullough from Carlow in a play off to take the runner up spot. In the U/13 group Darragh Fullam from Portarlington took the runner up spot.
Dave Morris one of our up and coming Professionals was at the club and is supporting our School & College Initiative. Dave will be visiting some Schools during the year to help with promoting the sport. He will be competing in Germany next week and playing Mark Williams, we wish him the very best of luck. Dave is a very positive player and not afraid to play anyone on the pro tour, this mind set is one for all young players to take on board. Dave has beaten the likes of Ronnie O’Sullivan and Judd Trump in the past and is climbing up the rankings.
Congratulations to Joe La Cumbre and to all the players for taking part. Thanks to Marian, Jim and Sharon for their help and providing excellent playing conditions. Thanks to Annette our Secretary for presenting the prizes and to all the parents who support these young players on a daily basis.
